House Democrats invited a group of laid-off Enron employees to Capitol Hill yesterday, listened to their concerns about losing their retirement savings and finding new jobs, and vowed to take action, CongressDaily reported. Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-Texas), whose downtown Houston district was the hardest hit by the financial collapse, had been a strong supporter of Enron and has received $38,000 in campaign contributions from the company since her election in 1994.
Jackson-Lee is now pushing for a bill that would prevent consultants from also auditing the same firm, cap employee investments in their own firm and create a federal court proceeding for employee grievances. She has requested that Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) hold hearings on whether the bankruptcy code needs to be corrected to help employees recover some of their assets.
