Last Friday aides to House and Senate bankruptcy reform conferees met for about an hour to discuss general matters related to the legislation (S. 420/H.R. 333), CongressDaily reported. The bipartisan meeting included representatives from the Senate and House Judiciary committees, as well as from the House Financial Services, Energy and Commerce and Education and the Workforce committees, which will have limited consultation on sections of the bill.
Sources said that participants reviewed a side-by-side comparison of the bills that had been prepared House Judiciary Chairman James Sensenbrenner’s (R-Wis.) staff. Sensenbrenner will chair the conference committee. Aides agreed to skim the bills for technical inconsistencies, but said that any further substantial staff discussions would wait until Congress returns from the August recess. Conferees are expected to meet formally for the first time shortly after returning in September, although a precise date has not been set.
